Origin and Principle
Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine which originated in the 1800s through the work of a German physician Samuel Hahnemann. The fundamental principle on which homeopathy is based is the “law of similars”. According to this law, a substance has the power to cure a disease, if it produces upon ingestion, symptoms similar to the disease to be cured.
Today, homeopathy is practiced by over 500 million people world wide and is constantly increasing in popularity.
Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine
In homeopathy, we have always recognized that the patient must be viewed as a whole and the desires, aversions, dreams and disappointments all go towards making us who we are. All of these factors are considered before a remedy aimed at gently restoring the system to a long lasting balance can be prescribed.
First of all, the two systems of medicine are not opposed to one another. Conventional medicine also recognizes the interrelationship of the emotional and mental state of patients with their physical symptoms. Examples include the negative effect of prolonged stress on blood pressure and cholesterol levels and the positive effect of laughter on blood sugar and pain management.
Secondly, homeopathic remedies can be taken in conjunction with most medicines prescribed through conventional medicine. Many homeopathic practitioners are happy to talk to your doctors about their prescriptions for you.
Remedies are chosen based on the total symptom picture of each person. For this reason, a very detailed history (including the physical, mental, and emotional history) has to be taken in order to prescribe a remedy which will help the inherent vitality of patients themselves to achieve a long lasting cure.
Homeopathic remedies are prepared from either plants, animals, or minerals. They are all natural remedies and are FDA regulated. Remedies have miniscule amounts of the active ingredient which ensures a gentle and safe cure even for children and infants. They can be purchased at integrative pharmacies, and at some health food stores. Some chains such as whole foods stock the more common remedies. In addition, there are a number of online retailers from which remedies can be purchased for delivery straight to the house.
